About Walgreens

Founded in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, Walgreens began as a small local drug store. The story of how Charles R. Walgreen, Sr. ventured into the world of pharmacy is quite extraordinary. After losing a portion of his finger while working at a shoe factory during his youth, Walgreen turned to the drug store industry for employment and personal fulfillment. In 1893, he moved to Chicago, a city known for its fierce competition among over 1,500 drug stores. Determined not to rely on his family's financial support, Walgreen worked at various drug stores until he was able to purchase one of them from the owner. It took him years to repay the loan, but eventually, Walgreens grew into a chain of pharmacies that offer a wide range of products including cosmetics, personal care items, sexual wellness products, eyewear, school and office supplies, pet supplies, small appliances, groceries, and seasonal items. Additionally, Walgreens also houses natural and organic products in its stores.
